There’s something magical about a winter morning in the bush. The air is crisp, the fog hangs low over the landscape, and every game drive begins with the promise of the unexpected.

On this particular morning, the fog was thick that visibility was limited, but that only added to the excitement. As we made our way through the reserve, we spotted a fresh set of leopard tracks walking on the road. Knowing just how elusive these magnificent cats can be, our tracker, Themba, climbed down from the vehicle to investigate.

Step by step, he carefully followed the tracks before returning with a smile. “They’re fresh, very fresh” he said. “He can’t be far.”

With renewed anticipation, Themba climbed back onto the tracker seat, and we continued along the road. Less than a kilometre later, there he was, Bizaan, our resident male leopard, on the move.

Focused and completely unaware of our presence, he was stalking a nearby herd of impala. Every movement was slow, deliberate, and almost silent as he crept through the grass. For a moment, it looked as though he might be successful, but the impala suddenly caught sight of him and scattered in all directions.

Unfazed, Bizaan carried on with his morning patrol. We watched in awe as he melted into the fog, each step making him harder to see until he simply disappeared like a ghost.
